René Gielen

René Gielen is a Germany-based independent senior software craftsman, consultant, trainer, lecturer and author, focused on the Java platform ecosystem, enterprise grade software architecture, agile development methodologies and application lifecycle management. In the last 12 years, he helped clients ranging from startups to large multinational companies realizing software projects of any scale, in various roles like senior developer, software architect, project lead, trainer, mentor or technology enabler.

René is a frequent speaker at conferences and user group events, lately at Devoxx 2011 and GearConf 2012. He is also a guest author in Java champion Michael Hüttermann’s book “Agile Application Lifecycle Management” published by Manning, 2011.

Whenever possible, René tries to invest time in his open source activities. He is the project management committee (PMC) chair of the Apache Struts project and a Vice President and member of The Apache Software Foundation. Besides other open source activities, he is and was active in the development and design of the Apache Struts 2 framework, as well as in the XWork and WebWork projects at the OpenSymphony Group.
