Many organisations are worried about adopting open source software. There are many concerns, most of which are equally applicable when considering closed source solutions, such as technical fit, robustness and quality. However, one concern that appears to be different in open source is whether the software is sustainable. There is a perception that a closed source solution, with a single owner will be around as long as the owning organisation, but for open source there is no single owner, so who is guaranteeing the ongoing availability and maintenance of the software? In this session Ross Gardler will bust some of the myths surrounding software sustainability (both for closed and open source software). He will then go on to present a mechanism for evaluating the sustainability of an open source project. This model can be used to plan for a managed engagement with open source.
