There is a specific gwt-maven-plugin at codehaus, but if you want to run with surefire, you need the following settings:

Use the following configuration:

<useSystemClassLoader>true</useSystemClassLoader>

<useManifestOnlyJar>false</useManifestOnlyJar>

<forkMode>once</forkMode>

 forkMode at least once, always if not enough
